The Dreaded Globe Artichokes of Knightshayes Court

3h Globe Artichoke at Knightshayes 040118

I just love the walled garden at Knightshayes Court, the National Trust property just outside Tiverton in Devon.  It’s magnificent in the Spring, summer and autumn, full of fruit, flowers, vegetables and in the best tradition of English gardens, with mixed planting and a strong sense of design side by side.

Yet this picture was made in the dead of winter, one of several Globe Artichokes left over from last year, rising up with a sense of decaying grandeur over beds that have now largely died back or been cleared for a new year’s planting.

Bamboo pen and watercolour; 23×15 inches; Fabriano cartridge paper; 4th January 2018.
