Budleigh Salterton sketch 2015

The beach, Budleigh Salterton, Devon.  Bamboo pen with Chinese ink and watercolour, 13.5 x 9.5 inches.

This is the first drawing I did after starting to make my own bamboo pens in 2015.  I love drawing with real bits of wood from the garden and the scuffling effect obtained which develops as the nib wears, so that you do the fine bits first and then (in a larger drawing) end up with a bit of raggedy twig which is perfect for doing trees, clouds and impressionistic marks!  Someone kindly commented that they liked the simplicity of this drawing and I was delighted because it is often a skill of the great artists that they capture a scene in a few simple lines.  I wish… but I enjoyed this one.

An unmounted pen and wash (ink and watercolour) painting `The Beach, Budleigh Salterton’ by Jac May. Postage/carriage is not included in the price.

Through its simplicity this painting captures a familiar scene at Budleigh Salterton with immediacy and charm.
